Hello all,
My friend and I were planning on a new online venture. We happily named the company and I logged on to the net, confident that I would get atleast a “.in” domain, since those didn’t have much of a popular demand. Right, first I logged on to namecheap.com, my favourite domain website, and as I had expected, all the usual extensions (.com, .net, .org….) were bought out. So I logged on to aapkadomain.com, and confidently typed in the domain, and while the search was going on, I logged on to my PayPal, all ready to authorise the payment.
WHACK!
The domain was already occupied!
Angry, sad, I settled for another domain, by adding a stupid “online” to the original venture name. Meanwhile, I just logged in to the occupied .in domain name and was confronted with the page saying -
Welcome to ——.in ——.in is your gateway to the best sites on the Internet for ——! Looking for Ancestry, Women, or Travel? Browse our recommended resources or just try the ——.in search.
AND it also said -
Buy this domain The domain ——.in may be for sale by its owner!
Aaah! Eagerly, I clicked More Details…
I was taken to a page called sedo.com, where I was asked to type in an offer in USD. Considering the cost of a usual .in domain name ($19 USD), and $10 USD for the guy, I put in $30 USD.
WHACK!
- Your offer is too low. Premium domain names typically sell for three or four-figure amounts, and sellers will simply not respond to a bid if it is too low. If you need help setting a price, you can request an expert Domain Appraisal. You are REQUIRED to enter a bid of at least 60 USD.
WTF???!!!!!!!!!!
The idiots aren’t even using the domain! They’re just out there waiting for people who desperately want the domain to spend around two hundred bucks!
Such hopless and should-be-made-illegal domain realtors are plaguing the web community! The internet is a free space. It isn’t their right to buy a hell lot of domains and sell them for an exorbitant amount! They’re denying small start ups to survive! I believe that such realtor promoting sites like Sedo should be banned! Domain realting should be made illegal!
We’re already facing a severe domain shortage. And many of the domains we query for are actually in the hands of such domain realtors. In a few years, we might approach a situation, where we just don’t have any more domains left! Unless we go in for stuff like mydomainnamexyz12345.com or something! Domain realting is so unethical!
Do you agree with me? Please support the cause! Spread the message! Blog about domain realting, and drop me a comment here, I promise some link love! Lets join hands against an unjust cause on the net!

Well I confess I did not know this Mohan but I will check it out with my son. he has just got me one, http://www.micksplace.org but I think it was US $ 80 per two years, I will ask him Friday.
I know he was with a Brit company and they went bad as he hosts sites for the folk he builds websites for, so I think this one is an Aussie site but could not swear to it.
Now I have to build the site 5 pages will do me.
I will blog this on Friday when I get more info from him as I see your point.
have you tried almost free hosting? I did once a few years back but sadly have misplaced the site now, it was in Washington or Oregon I think

Well, though I agree that domain realting is an unethical thing and many deserving candidates don’t get the appropriate domain name for their sites, I must say it is something which has become an industry in itself. Professional Domain parking companies are very big organization who cash on their huge pool of premier domains. They not only display contextual ads on these domain but also sell these domains for exhorbitant prices (wiki.com was sold on $ 3 millions !). Even Google seems to favour these companies as it does not allowed diaplying ads on parkdomain unless they are owned by premier companies. Owing to democratic nature of web, we can’t dictate selective approach in domain registration. Though it’s difficult to control this problem directly , it can be sorted out by devloping any alternate domain and making an extremely useful and infromative website on it. Nobody visits Indianrailways.com but millions of people regularly visit Indianrailways.gov.in. So there is always a way to tackle this problem.

Though it’s difficult to control this problem directly, it can be sorted out by developing your alternate domain and making an extremely useful and informative website on it. Nobody visits Indianrailways.com but millions of people regularly visit Indianrailways.gov.in. A good Domain is certainly helpful but if we can’t get that , there is always a way to tackle this problem with patience and perseverance.

Well when one thinks about this we cannot all have the same can we so there has to be a rationing of some sort so you pick what you like and submit it; it seems quite reasonable to me,
The one I picked was disallowed in the end so I submitted another at the moment I have not heard; I’m sure I will of course, lets face it we cannot all have what we desire.
Common sense should prevail in this matter I think.

Yeah I guess so Mick.
But it still feels unfair that a company should buy up domains like land. Especially ones they’re not going to use! Just for resale!

Yes I see your point but this is capitalism at work here rearing its at times ugly head; it feels and does seem very unfair at times I agree.
Still this was a good point of yours to raise. and a good post.
look on the bright side this topic of yours has gathered a few comments.
I hardly ever get any comments at all.

ok so I asked my son about this and he said it goes on in other countries but not in Australia so yes it does appear to be unfair, he agrees so you have a strong point.
